Barbecued Jackfruit (aka Vegan “Pulled Pork”)
In Your Instant Pot Or On Your Stovetop
This Barbecue Jackfruit recipe will have your most plant-resistant carnivorous friends amazed they are not actually eating barbecue pulled pork! Simple to make, this recipe comes together in less than twenty minutes. Try it with my delicious Homemade Barbecue Sauce prepared on your stovetop or in your Instant Pot. It is the perfect barbecue sauce for this dish. Barbecue Jackfruit is especially good served on an Avocado Brioche Burger Bun.
Barbecued Jackfruit (aka Vegan “Pulled Pork”) In Your Instant Pot Or On Your Stovetop
Ingredients
- 2 16oz cans green jackfruit in brine aka young jackfruit
- 1/4 cup light brown sugar
- 2 Tablespoons chili powder blend
- 1 Tablespoon paprika
- 1/4-1/2 teaspoon chipotle chili powder optional, may substitute cayenne
- 2-3 Tablespoons Liquid Smoke
- 1 teaspoon granulated onion
- 1 teaspoon granulated garlic
- 1 1/2 cups Homemade Barbecue Sauce (You may substitute commercial BBQ sauce, but you’ll be missing out!)
Instructions
Stovetop:
- With your thumb and forefinger pull the wedges of jackfruit apart until it resembles pulled pork. Cover with cold water to rinse out some of the brine. Drain, rinse and drain again.
- Transfer to a covered skillet or sauté pan.
- Add remaining ingredients and simmer for 10-15 minutes.
- Serve hot on a bun or as a side dish.
Instant Pot:
- With a fork pull the wedges of jackfruit apart until it resembles pulled pork. Cover with cold water to rinse out some of the brine. Drain, rinse and drain again.
- Transfer to an Instant Pot liner. Add remaining ingredients and place into Instant Pot. Close steam vent. Cook on Manual High for 0 minutes. Instant release.
- Serve hot on a bun or as a side dish.

Thank you for your comment, Deborah. I’m was never a pulled pork eater either, even when I ate meat. I’m glad your daughter likes this dish and that you prefer it to the real thing. I like it without the Liquid Smoke as well, but for those who really enjoy the smoked flavor of pulled pork, it lends a more authentic flavor. I like it both with and without the Liquid Smoke.

We are having a Vegan Thanksgiving due to my newly graduated from college daughter being home. She really liked the barbeque jackfruit and I really like the avocado bread it is served on. Meal is very interesting and well worth trying. Tho I’ve never been a barbeque eater anyway tho I’m not vegan. I don’t eat pulled pork so this is better to me.
By the way, I do not add the Liquid Smoke when I make the barbeque sauce.
